KAMONYI – The Rwanda Initiative for Sustainable Development (RISD) has called on local leaders in Kamonyi district to play a major role in educating residents on the new land law so as to avoid court disputes.

Annie Kayiraba, the Director General of RISD, made the remarks on Wednesday while closing a three-day training for local leaders on the new land law.

The training, sponsored by RISD under the Land Dispute Management Project (LDMP), attracted 82 local leaders in Mugina sector.

The participants were equipped with knowledge on the land laws and skills of solving land disputes at grass root levels.

"RISD’s objective is to have the number of land disputes reduced by having local leaders and residents involved in the process without necessarily referring to courts,” she said.

Kayiraba noted a survey done in areas of Gatsata zone, Gasabo district indicate that land disputes can be reduced if local leaders and residents are equipped with knowledge on land related issues.
