BURERA – The District mayor, Samuel Sembagare, has said that the one cow per family project has created a positive impact among residents.
Sembagari noted that there has been a tremendous reduction in cases of malnutrition and increased income for families as a result of the programme.
He made the remarks at a function where a local NGO ‘Action Nord-Sud Rwanda’ gave out 20 Friesian heifers on credit to poor families in Rwerere sector.
The coordinator of Action Nord-Sud Rwanda, Déogratias Butera, revealed that each beneficiary will pay a subsidised price of Rwf300,000 over a period of two years.
The payments would be deposited to a community development fund which will purchase more cows for other community members.
Dr Wilson Rutaganira of RALDA, warned residents against selling the cows and urged them to properly look after the animals.
"This is the beginning of the end of poverty and every one should strive to become a winner,’’ he said.
Action Nord-Sud Rwanda has given out over 300 heifers to poor families in different sectors of the district as part of poverty alleviation drive.
