THIS year’s Tour of Rwanda, also Rwanda’s first ever international cycling competition, has left a lasting impression on the International Cycling Union (UCI).
UCI’s head of national federations’ relations Dominique Raymond was impressed with the level of organization during the eight-day event.

"The local cycling federation (Ferwacy) did a very good job. I never thought that the competition would be so smooth,” the 42-year-old conceded.

"Not only did the competition have a good turn up of riders but it also had a good following from the local crowd which is a big plus to Rwandan cycling,” she continued.

"In my 32-year experience dealing with cycling competitions all over the world, this event surely ranks up there.”

"This country has the potential to host international cycling competitions like the mountain bike climbing world championships because of its naturally hilly terrain,” she added.

Morocco’s Adil Jelloul and Saadoune Abdelaati claimed the first and second positions to pocket Rwf1.1m and Rwf0.6m respectively.

Local cycling star Adrien Niyonshuti pocketed Rwf 0.4m after securing the final podium slot.

Overall Rwanda’s two teams; Karisimbi and Akagera walked away Rwf340.000 and Rwf214.000 richer after finishing second and third.

Morocco took home the ultimate prize of Rwf0.5m after emerging as the best team in the 1096km event.
