ADRIEN Niyonshuti scooped his first podium finish in this year’s Tour of Rwanda after finishing second in yesterday’s stage six from Kicukiro to Bugesera.

The South African based rider showed that he is a force to reckon with in sprint races (33km) as he clocked 48 minutes and 42 seconds, 27 seconds behind stage winner Saadoune Abdelaati of Morocco.

On top of a cash prize of Rwf0.3m, Niyonshuti, who is riding for Karisimbi also claimed the blue, white and red jerseys after emerging as the best mountain climber, best young rider and best local rider in the individual time trial.

With a faint chance of winning the tour, the 22-year-old has promised to keep the pace in the remaining two stages.

"It is true that we are racing against top quality cyclists but I’m determined to chase for that yellow jersey in the remaining two stages. The Moroccans have been a hard nut to crack but I’m going to push them all the way,” he said.

Today, riders head east in what is expected to be a grueling 7th stage from Kigali to Nyagatare.
Eleven countries are taking part in the tour.
