WESTERN PROVINCE

Gisenyi sector, known as a major tourist area, has been told it should be exemplary to other sectors as far as hygiene is concerned, not only in Rubavu district, but also throughout Western Province.

Brigitte Umurisa, Gisenyi sector staff in charge of people’s welfare spoke during a hygiene campaign, saying the city had a reputation to protect.

"Gisenyi sector receives visitors from all Rwandan provinces as well as various countries all over the world, who not only lodge in hotels along Lake Kivu but also in other guesthouses and lodges in Gisenyi town. It is however unfortunate to find out that the hygiene in what should be exemplary town in the province has not yet reached the recommendable standard.”

She said that the sector authority was doing "everything possible” to improve the hygiene in Gisenyi, through constant supervision of people’s homes and public places such as bars, hotels and lodges.

She said the sector was ready to close any of them with low standards such as substandard toilets, bathrooms, restaurant kitchens and others.

"Although a lot of effort is till needed, the district is doing every thing possible to improve hygiene through various ways and we hope it will soon be of good standard.”

She said that a lot had to be done because good, standard restaurants and hotel were main indicators of development in any country, adding that their services would give a good or a bad image of the country across the globe.

She called upon restaurants and bar attendants to be conscious about hygiene and said that the district authorities in Western Province would not hesitate to close hotels and restaurants that did not meet the required standards.
