KIGALI - Tests for drivers to acquire driving licenses will soon be decentralized in order to reduce congestion. This was revealed yesterday by Supt Egide Ruzigamanzi, the traffic police chief.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Ruzigamanzi said that the decision was made during a meeting between traffic officials and heads of driving schools that was held on Friday.

"We have agreed that teaching and testing services for drivers should come down at least to district level,” Ruzigamanzi said.

He explained that although these services have been accessible in different parts of the country, it has not been appropriate and effective to suit demand.

"We used to communicate when and where these tests would take place in different provinces and people turn up in big numbers making it hard and time wasting,” he said.
He explained that driving schools will be set in districts to train and set exams.

Although he could not determine when this would be implemented, he stressed that it will take place as soon as possible.

"I have already set up a committee to work with heads of driving schools so as to speed-up the plan.”

Ruzigamanzi added that the meeting among other concerns also reached a resolution to reverse the setting of the drivers’ examinations.

On this, he said that the two bodies are focusing on making the examinations standard countrywide as well focusing on the syllabus to be followed by all driving schools.
