KAYONZA – The Gender Based Violence (GBV) forum of Kayonza district in collaboration with Partners in Health (PIH) has warned parents in Kayonza district against condoning GBV. 

At a two-day seminar that started yesterday, Dr. Peter Drobac of PIH said GBV hinders development and is a violation of human rights.

"One out of five women living in the US fall victim to GBV. We need to fight it and not despair since it affects families,” he said.

Jean Claude Nsengimana and Eugenia Mukanagengwa both participants from Ngego sector, stunned the participants when they revealed how they used to beat up their partners whenever drunk.

"I could fight my wife over petty issues. I am changed and feel relieved,” Nsengimana said.

Christiana Umuhire, officer in charge of women development in the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion said it was time to discard cultural ties that promote gender inequality. "We can’t be slaves to culture.”
