Stage 2 (Rubavu to Kigali) 148km

MOROCCANS showed that there is a huge gulf between them and the rest of the pack after posting a top four finish on Day one of the Tour of Rwanda.

Jelloul Adil won the 148km stage from Kigali to Rubavu in a time of 4hours, 15minutes and 31 seconds. Abraham Ruhumuriza, riding for Team Karisimbi, stood out as Rwanda’s top performer in 8th position (4:17:33).

The Tour’s defending champion did not have a good day at the office after finishing a distant 11th, three seconds adrift of Ruhumuriza.

Ruhumuriza and Niyonshuti started well, dominating in the early stages but lost the lead to the more agile Moroccans.
After receiving Euros 482 (Rwf 410.000) for winning the stage, Morocco’s Adil told Times Sport that he expects a tougher race today.

"I know that it is going to be a lot tougher tomorrow. These guys are in good shape and very competitive.”
Meanwhile, Niyonshuti said that he would bounce back from his shaky start. "This is only the beginning. There is still room to turn things round,” he said.

Today, Stage two will have teams riding from Rubavu back to Kigali. Twelve teams are taking part in this year’s edition. The tour which winds up next Monday will cover 1096km.
