The Minister of Education has urged institutions of higher learning to revise the progammes they offer in order to address the skills gap currently affecting the country. 

"I do believe that in the light of the skills gap identified in the national skills audit, it is very worthwhile and  indeed essential, for Higher Institutes of Learning to revisit their curricula to asses the extent to which their programmes address these gaps and adjust them accordingly,” Dr. Charles Murigande urged.

He made the call during the second stakeholders meeting organized by Mutara Polytechnic in Kigali yesterday.

The meeting was aimed at discussing the proper way of implementing the additional courses on the schools’ curriculum.

Murigande added that all stakeholders in the education sector should continuously strive to provide an education that responds to the needs of the country.

The institution’s Rector, Prof. Philip Brierley, said that in efforts to fill the skills gap in the country, they were embarking on a progaramme to expand the schools curricula through introducing new courses at the university.

Among the new faculties that the university will introduce in the next academic year are the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the faculty of Mass Communication.

The University currently has 1,460 students and it projects to have over 15, 000 students by the year 2020. It also boasts of being the first institution to offer degree level programmes in Veterinary medicine in Rwanda.
