HUYE – Following the weekend heavy rains, Mwogo River flooded and over flowed into maize plantations in the surrounding marshland and Kigoma sector destroying several hectares of Maize plantations.

Farmers who talked to The New Times said that they were distraught because the seeds which they had planted on the consolidated marshland were acquired on credit from local farmers’ cooperatives.

The farmers appealed for help from government, saying There is need to regulate water flow in the marshland to avoid a similar incident.

"The marshland requires a new big water canal which will help in channelling the surging water,” noted Emmanuel Ntirushwa, a member of a local cooperative operating Mwogo marshland. 

Sector authorities in conjunction with a local organisation ARDI have promised to distribute maize seeds to farmers whose crops were destroyed.
