Over 64 roads accidents were recorded during the just concluded nationwide “Road Safety Week”, a police report says. Out of the accidents that occurred, 10 were recorded as serious while the rest were minor. Three people died during the course of the week in Nyarugenge, Nyaruguru and Gicumbi Districts.

According to the report, the accidents in which the three died were caused by heavy rains that fell in the three districts.
In an interview with The New Times, Police spokesman, Supt. Eric Kayiranga said accidents decreased compared to the previous year’s road safety week.
"Generally there was a decline in the road accidents due to good cooperation with the population and drivers in particular. But the big contribution in achieving this goes to the media that made everyone aware of the week which made them more vigilant” Kayiranga said.
A report issued recently showed an increase of 3.6 percent in the three months of July August and September in which 715 cases were registered.
By September, 1704 accidents had been registered across the country in which in 26 people died September alone.
Over 300 people died in road accidents across the country in 2008.
