MARINE’S former players find the idea of taking a two-year break from the national basketball league inconceivable. To this effect, Times Sport has learnt that the players together with their head coach Prosper Mihigo are already plotting to start up a new club.
"We are doing all that we can to feature in next year’s league. We have approached some potential sponsors and are now waiting for their response,” Mihigo said.
According to reliable sources, marine’s key sponsors - Ministry of Defense (MoD) decided that the club should take a break from the league citing financial, managerial and administrative problems.
However, Mihigo has highlighted that they are already looking for a sponsor and that their new club name will be made public soon.
"We are not going to disintegrate. The players still want to play as a unit and we are scheduled to continue training as usual,” Mihigo added.
Marine made their league debut in 2006 where they finished third after eventual champions APR and Espoir.
The following year, the Rubavu-based side dominated headlines after lifting their maiden title.
In 2008 and 2009, Marine finished runners-up to APR, who have stumped their authority as Rwanda’s basketball kings.
