A couple and their daughter are in police custody in connection with stealing US$12,500 from an Ethiopian national, Dawit Hailu, Compassion International Associate Director for East Africa. 

The trio, Gabriel Bisengimana, his wife Gaudance Kandenga and their 25-year old daughter, Anastasie Nyirankuriza, were picked up from their home in Ryaruhanga cell Mubuga sector in Karongi District after Hailu filed the case at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Kacyiru.

Nyirankuriza who was Hailu’s office cleaner admitted to the crime saying that she had used only US$500 to buy drugs and gave the remaining amount to her parents.

Police discovered  US$10,800 at the couple’s home.
Nyirankuriza who The New Times spoke to at CID headquarters yesterday said that she had taken the money to cater for her medical bills. 

"I only used 500 US Dollars to buy drugs and remained with a little money that I have been using. I gave all the remaining money to my parents to keep it until we plan on how we will spend it,” Nyirankuriza said.

"When I returned, I was told that she had not appeared to work for a whole week and she had even left without being paid and her phone was off,” Hailu said.

Hailu was all praises for the national police for the recovery of the money. 

"It’s not only about getting back my money, but also the about integrity by the Rwandan police,” he said.
