MUHANGA — Female residents in Cyeza sector have played a big role in saving the life of a one-day old infant after it was abandoned by its mother last weekend.

The "beautiful baby boy” was born to and abandoned by Chantal Umulisa, 23, a mother already of two children.

She is currently being held at Nyamabuye police station.
Umulisa reportedly dropped the infant on top of a makeshift toilet 200 metres away from her home in Bwirika village.

According to resident Emmanuel Habimana, the child was discovered by five women in the area, who later started searching for the mother of the child.

Other women alleged that Umulisa was immediately suspected since she had attempted to abandon another infant last year.

The women alerted police and local leaders as soon as the identity of the baby’s mother was confirmed.

The New Times was unable to speak to Umulisa by press time, but police sources in the area have confirmed the incident and Umulisa is set to face courts of law.

Past behavior will be taken into account during the trial.

Residents in the area have seriously protested Umulisa’s uncouth behavior and have asked that local women leaders take measures to educate their own on human rights, especially during pregnancy.
