RWAMAGANA - Gacaca Court of Appeal of Nyarugunga in Kicukiro district has acquitted businessman Japhet Karegeya, of Genocide charges. Karegeya had been accused of being responsible for the death of Pierre Mushumba as well as two other victims during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Karegeya denied the charges.
RWAMAGANA - Gacaca Court of Appeal of Nyarugunga in Kicukiro district has acquitted businessman Japhet Karegeya, of Genocide charges.
Karegeya had been accused of being responsible for the death of Pierre Mushumba as well as two other victims during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Karegeya denied the charges.
The court which sat in Munyaga Sector, Rwamagana district last Friday, ruled that Karegeya was not responsible for the death of the three victims of Genocide.
The trial had initially been conducted by Kaduha Gacaca Court of Munyaga sector, but Nyarugunga judges were called in to give a verdict.
After court pronounced the verdict, Jean Baptiste Gakwerere, a survivor who lost his relatives during the Genocide said he suspects foul play.
"I am short of words and indeed devastated by the court’s verdict. To me it appears that witnesses have changed their stand all of a sudden, and something fishy must be behind this case,” he said.
