The National Director of a local NGO Assist Rwanda, Emmanuel Shamakokera, has said that Human Rights need regular enforcement if societies are to embrace sustainable peace.

Shemakokera was addressing a group of youth trained to monitor and evaluate local mediators (Abunzi), prisons and Travaux d’Interets Général (TIG) performances across the country.

"You are still young, and can report perfectly and quickly, go especially to rural areas and make residents understand their rights, and how to fight for and safeguard their rights,” Shemakokera said while concluding a one week youth training on human rights.

The trained youth will train others who will work in two sectors of each district in the country to monitor how the above government agencies respect human rights.

They are expected to report where the government is not meeting standards of respecting human rights.

The programme pioneered by Assist Rwanda is a European Union sponsored programme in the Ministries of Justice and Finance.

About 20 youths from different Districts in the country participated in the training that took place at Fresh Hotel, Nyabugogo.
