KIGALI - The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) has disbursed $10 million to help in the electrification of some of the country’s rural areas, State Minister for Energy Albert Butare has said.  

In an interview with The Sunday Times yesterday, the minister said that the bank’s Director General, Abdul Aziz Khalif, had already signed the loan agreement, which will at its initial stage cater for Kicukiro, Gasabo and Nyarugenge districts.

"This is an achievement. We shall also extend to Nyagatare district in the Eastern province and Nyamagabe in the Southern province,” Butare said, adding that the BADEA chief is in the country for a three-day visit.

The bank, which has its headquarters in Sudan, is among the development partners who are engaged in an initiative dubbed ‘the electrification rollout programme’.  

BADEA is a financial institution funded by governments of member states of the League of Arab States.
