HUYE – Over 250 road construction workers from Maraba Sector on Wednesday caused a scene at the district offices, as they protested non payment of their wages.

The workers accuse their employer of failing to pay their wages for the last four months, accumulating about Rwf10million in arrears. They hence asked the district to intervene.

The group was employed by a private company- ECAN owned by Abraham Nayandi to construct the Gashiru - Gikomero - Rundaazi road in Maraba Sector.

"They promised us Rwf1000 daily but it has been months now and we have not received a penny,” Julienne Mukamana, one of the workers said.

Camille Ruremesha, the officer in-charge of construction activities at ECAN told The New Times that the delay in payment was a result of the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion (client) failure to effect payment to the company.

When contacted, François Uhagaze, the district Mayor said the district would intervene to ensure that the residents are paid their wages.

"We are going to involve all the concerned parties in finding a solution to the problem. The fact that the ministry has not released the money should not be used as an excuse, the company has to respect the contract it has with the workers and then follow up with the ministry later,” he said.
ECAN started hiring road construction workers in August this year.
