NYARUGURU- The National Executive Secretary of Gacaca courts, Domitile Mukantaganzwa, has commended the commitment exhibited by traditional judges (Inyangamugayo) in the country, urging them to remain persons of integrity within society even after their assignment.

She made the remarks on Wednesday in Munini Sector, while officiating at the official closure of Gacaca courts in the sectors of Ngera, Ngoma, Muganza and Kivu in Nyaruguru District.

"People had big doubts about Gacaca courts and their operations, many thought that they would fail. Today we celebrate the success of our home made solutions to problems we were faced with,” Mukantaganzwa said, adding that there was no any other alternative to avoid impunity.

"I congratulate all Inyangamugayo for the work well done and for their integrity during the operation of these courts,” she added.

Vincent Birindabagabo, the Gacaca coordinator in Minini Sector said the judges were willing to offer their services in the future if need arises.

The biggest challenge the courts faced, he said, was the refusal by some residents to divulge information about what happened during the Genocide.

Felix Sibomana, the District Mayor congratulated the judges for their commitment and sacrifice in contributing to the unity and reconciliation process in the country.

During the function, the Inyangamugayo were given certificates of merit in recognition of their efforts.
