The Nyarugenge District Advisory Council Tuesday met and accepted the resignation of the Mayor, Origene Rutayisire.

Rutayisire had tendered in his resignation letter on Sunday evening citing personal reasons. His decision to resign followed a Kigali District security meeting which was held last Friday.

"Since he cites his personal reasons for his resignation, we decided to let him go,” Alex Africa, the president of the council said yesterday in a telephone interview.

The council, according to Africa, has five days to look for Rutayisire’s replacement.

Africa also revealed that an audit will be carried out in the district and officials found to have misused public funds will be punished.

Asked whether Rutayisire was under pressure to resign for the alleged illegal approval of construction of a hotel in Nyarugenge District, Africa could neither conform nor deny.
"I discussed with Rutayisire over this issue of illegal construction of a hotel, but he said it was not the reason why he was resigning.”

According to our source, the matter of the hotel featured prominently in last Friday’s security meeting.

It was alleged that the district official knew that the hotel being built in Kiyovu by Jean de Dieu Muyenzi had no proper documents but he never blocked it.

When contacted, KCC’s Director of Communications, Bruno Rangira, confirmed that the hotel will be demolished soon.
