KIREHE - Authorities in Kirehe district have said they expect to produce 83,300 tonnes of maize this planting season.
The vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs, Benson Muhikira told The New Times yesterday, that farmers have embarked on extensive maize production programme.
"We have been waiting for the rains. Farmers prepared land using tractors, and since we are receiving good rains we anticipate a bumper harvest,” he said.
Muhikira added that under the new system of land consolidation, farmers are equipped with skills to practice modern agriculture on 28,000 hectors of land.
The vice mayor added that local authorities have brought in additional agricultural extension expertise to advise farmers on best practise including use of farm input for the purposes of maximizing production.
