Residents of Gihorwe cell, in Kabatwa sector, of Nyabihu district are up in arms against the army, after the cold blood murder of an area resident by a solider of the Rwanda Defence Forces stationed in the area.

The murder of Twizerimana Gahunda sparked off a two-day demonstration by the residents who denied that an autopsy be done on the body.

According to sources, the deceased was gunned down by a soldier of the 6th Battalion operating in Nyabihu.  Twizerimana was laid to rest on Sunday.

The identity of the assailant has been kept a secret and investigations have been launched by the military prosecution.

Speaking to The New Times, the Mayor of Nyabihu District, Jean Damascene Ndagijimana, revealed that the soldier who murdered Twizerimana claims that the deceased tried to grab his gun and that he shot and killed him in self-defence.

"We are trying to calm down residents in partnership with all security organs,” Ndagijimana said.
