LONDON - President Paul Kagame yesterday visited the Imperial College London where he toured key facilities and witnessed the signing of a historical partnership agreement between the University and Government of Rwanda According to a statement from the Office of the President, Kagame was received at the university by the Rector, Sir Roy Anderson, and Professor Baron Peter Piot, Director of the Global Health Institute. The agreement signed by the University’s Rector and Rwanda’s Ambassador to the UK, Claver Gatete, will see collaboration between Imperial College and Rwandan institutions in the areas of education, training and research with particular emphasis on health. The partnership will also focus on science and technology, higher education, capacity building in various areas including doctoral and post-doctoral training, as well as academic and research exchange.

According to a statement from the Office of the President, Kagame was received at the university by the Rector, Sir Roy Anderson, and Professor Baron Peter Piot, Director of the Global Health Institute.
The agreement signed by the University’s Rector and Rwanda’s Ambassador to the UK, Claver Gatete, will see collaboration between Imperial College and Rwandan institutions in the areas of education, training and research with particular emphasis on health.
The partnership will also focus on science and technology, higher education, capacity building in various areas including doctoral and post-doctoral training, as well as academic and research exchange.
"Implementation of the agreement is expected to start immediately and a Rwandan delegation comprising of representatives from medical establishments and institutions of higher learning, is set to visit the University shortly,” the statement added.
The college has established relationships with institutions in Asia and Latin America, but its agreement with Rwanda will be the first of its kind with an African country.
During his visit to the prestigious college, Kagame led by Lord Darzi, Professor of Surgery at Imperial College and the Institute of Cancer Research, toured the Energy Futures Lab where research is ongoing to develop new solar cell technologies to convert solar energy.
He also visited the Robotics Surgery Suite to view simulated surgery for training surgeons, using virtual reality and robotic technologies.
The President ended his two-day working visit to London yesterday and has arrived in Egypt today for a four-day official visit at the invitation of President Hosni Mubarak
During his 4-day working visit to Egypt, President Kagame, in his capacity as Chair of the EAC Summit, will address the China-Africa Forum to be held in Sharm El Sheikh over the weekend.
The China-Africa Cooperation Forum (CACF) was jointly proposed and established by China and a number if African countries in 2000. It was meant to establish long Sino-Africa relationships built on equal negotiation and enhanced understanding.
