RUBAVU/KARONGI - Police in Rubavu has warned motorists against driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Addressing motorists during the launch of the road safety week on Monday, the western Regional Police Commander, Chief Supt. Bosco Rangira cautioned them against breaching traffic rules .
"We need you alive and the passengers you carry should reach their intended destinations safely. We are not happy when we fine you because it shows that you’re not law abiding citizens,” Rangira said.
He explained that the road safety week will be dedicated to educating the public about traffic rules, instead of fining drivers who break the rules.
Rubavu Mayor, Pierre Celestin Twagirayezu urged residents to heed police advice, saying the campaign was for their own good.
Meanwhile, in Karongi, the district police commander, Supt. Danny Ndayambaje, cautioned drivers against reckless driving and over speeding.
He also appealed to members of the public to play a vital role in the prevention of road accidents.
"The main aim (of safety week) is to improve compliance to traffic rules and regulations as well as partnership in this regard,” Ndayambaje said.
Sebastian Hakizimana, the Karongi District vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs called on the public to cooperate with the police in order to promote national security.
He challenged police officers to desist from any form of corruption.
