KARONGI - Remains of 106 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, were last week discovered in a mass grave in Bwishyura Sector, Karongi District.

According to police, little was known about the discovered remains until recently when Gacaca officials extracted confessions from Genocide suspects.

"People were always hiding information about the whereabouts of the victims and it is only last week that they spoke out and we were able to retrieve them,” police told The New Times.

"It is impressive because if Gacaca had closed down, it would never have been discovered that remains were hidden near where victims were suspected to have been killed,” an official said.

It has been confirmed that the remains belong to victims who were hacked to death in Gatwaro stadium, where thousands had gathered to seek refuge.

Sources added that the victims formed  part of a group that was abandoned by French troops as they evacuated doctors and other medical practitioners who worked at Kibuye Hospital before and during the Genocide.

The remains are currently kept at Bwishyura sector headquarters as they await decent burial at a date yet to be communicated.
