Baseball is one game that is being initiated at Kigali Institute of Education as one way of enticing young children into sports.
Leon Pierre Nkusi, a physical education lecturer at the institute initiated the program on November 5 and it is set to run through to December 22.
According to Nkusi, baseball is one of the sports that are being handled at the training camp that is open to all holiday makers around KIE.
"We realized that a lot of children in Kigali have few or no playing activities and grounds so we decided to organize a holiday training camp for them.
We intend to use this camp to introduce a few new games like baseball, badminton amongst others,” Nkusi said.
It is estimated that over 106 children between the ages of 6 to12 are part of the training camp that is jointly run by Nkusi and 18 KIE physical education students.
At the end of the training camp, children aged 8 and above will be awarded certificates of participation.
However, Nkusi also pointed out that those who show good potential of growing into formidable players will be closely followed up in their respective schools.
Other games being handled include football, Rugby, Badminton, Tennis, basketball and volleyball.
