Guards win by four wickets

Dennis Mukama hit a frisky 23 runs and picked two wickets against Young Tigers to earn Right Guards a perfect start at the inaugural MM Industries 20/20 cricket tournament last Sunday.

Guards’ openers Jean Claude Siboniyo (06) and Emma Byiringiro (16) established a good platform for the club and with no extra bowling expected from Young Tigers’ top bowlers; Andre Kayitera and Eric Dusabe who had at the time bowled eight overs between themselves, the ex-Guards’ captain went ruthless at Young Tigers’ slow bowling attack.

And although he was unfairly given out for a stump out twenty runs short of the set target, Emma Rugamba hit 16 runs to leave the two clubs level.

But Guards who had only lost five wickets edged their break-away side by four wickets.

"It was a breath-taking game. We bowled and fielded well to restrict them to an achievable score.

The opening batsmen also laid a good plat-form for the middle order to finish up the job,” Guards’ Byiringiro excitedly said.

"This win should boost our chances because Young Tigers was one of our major worries,” he added.

Young Tigers’ captain Kayitera disappointedly said, "We are depressed about the loss but they deserve to win because they played well today.

Firstly, they restricted us to a low score and secondly batted well through their innings”.

Last Sunday’s win was Guards’ first in over three months and leaves the club and Kigali Cricket Club jointly top of the table with six points.
