KIGALI - The week dedicated to observing national road safety through various activities is set to begin today with a call to the public to minimize road accidents.

According to the Police spokesperson Supt. Eric Kayiranga, this seven-day operation will be officially launched by the Commissioner General of Police, Emmanuel Gasana.

"During this period, we will conduct various activities countrywide which all aim at encouraging proper use of roads by both drivers and pedestrians to avoid accidents. We therefore need partnership from the public.
"On ground actions will include educating road users through the media, posters, banners and stickers among others,” Kayiranga explained.

As regards the impact of such awareness weeks, the spokesperson noted that last year’s week led to significant reduction of major road accidents, adding that this week will certainly increase alertness on road safety measures.

According to a recent police report that highlighted the state of accidents on Rwandan roads about 1704 accidents have so been recorded since January this year with some of them resulting into deaths.  

The week will be launched today at the Kimihurura roundabout near Kigali Business Centre (KBC).
