The National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG), Thursday, held a meeting with different partners aimed at deciding the theme and venue for the 16th commemoration of the1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The commission is expected to come up with three optional themes and venues to be presented to Cabinet to make the final approval.
One of the proposed themes emphasizes the need to commemorate the Genocide as the nation strives to deal with related trauma.
The theme is based on a countrywide survey that indicated significant cases of trauma, especially during the commemoration week.
Three venues to host next year’s commemoration were also suggested, among them is Rusumo (Eastern Province), a historical area that borders Tanzania and Burundi.
It is also near Akagera River into which thousands of bodies were dumped and later ended up in Lake Victoria.
The other proposed venue is Cyome, currently in Ngororero district, Western province, home of Leon Mugesera, one of the brains behind the extermination of Tutsis and is currently living in Canada.
The Executive Secretary of CNLG Jean de Dieu Mucyo said emphasis for next year’s venue was put on ‘waters’ because of the many victims who were thrown in water bodies.
