A police report on accidents on Rwandan roads has revealed that 1,704 accidents have been recorded since January.
 Of the total number of accidents, 575 were fatal or incapacitating, while in 1,129, persons involved sustained minor injuries.

Although there was a slight fall of 3 percent between August and September, the number has shot up by 32 percent. 

Twenty six people died in the 246 accidents registered in September.

The report comes days before the Road Safety Week kicks off.
About 2,511 accidents were recorded last year, 759 of them serious.

Notwithstanding increased police fines, most of the accidents are caused by reckless driving and over-speeding, according to the report.

Police spokesperson, Supt. Eric Kayiranga, told The New Times that following the rise in accidents in the last few months, strategies are being laid to curb the development.

"Drivers have of recent refrained from the safety precautions which have led to the increase in accidents. Road safety rules are compulsory for everyone as provided by the law,” he said.
