HUYE- Staff at the National University of Rwanda (NUR)     have pledged to contribute Rwf55million towards the construction of classroom blocks under the nine-year Basic Education programme launched this year.

Talking to reporters on Wednesday, the university Rector, Professor Silas Lwakabamba said that staff unanimously agreed to contribute 10 percent of their month’s salary in support of the programme in the district.

"The proposal received overwhelming support from university staff; the contribution could increase because we are still sourcing for more support from within,” said Lwakabamba.

Dr. Julien Gashegu, the head of the Association of Academic Staff at the university, said that education is key in the development of any country and that university staff are privileged to contribute towards such a noble cause. 

"The development of the human resource is crucial to the development of the country, our contribution is in a bid to achieve this end,” he said.

NUR staff have previously contributed to the One-dollar campaign where about Rwf2.5million has been raised.

Homisdas Mutabingwa, the head of the administrative and technical staff said that more funds are being lobbied from expatriate staff in support of the One-dollar campaign.

The university, through its community outreach programmes supports Genocide orphans and vulnerable people in the neighbouring districts. It offers 10 scholarships to Genocide orphans at the university every year.
