Over 273 street children who have been undergoing rehabilitation from 14 centres have now been resettled with their families.

Solange Kananga, Coordinator of street children in the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion, said children find their way on the streets because of their parents irresponsibility.

She said the work to remove the kids from the streets is a community’s responsibility and not her ministry alone.

"In the rehabilitation centres, the children are taught the beauty of becoming responsible citizens and how their lives can be transformed to become future leaders of this nation,” Kananga said.

She revealed that that some children have mental problems which she attributed to drug abuse. She revealed that stern measures to hold parents accountable for mistreating their children, sometimes forcing them to flee into streets, are being designed.
