BUGESERA – The Rwanda National Police in collaboration with Red Cross-Rwanda has trained 100 pupils on  road safety in an effort to prevent road accidents.

The two-day training that ended Tuesday attracted pupils from various primary schools in Bugesera District, including Groupe Scolaire des Nyamata, and Nyamata Primary School.

As part of the training, the participants conducted a peaceful march from Nyamata Youth Centre to Nyamata town, aimed at sensitising the public on road safety.

Led by the Police Spokesman, Eric Kayiranga, the pupils carried placards urging motorists against over speeding and driving under influence of alcohol. They later painted zebra crossing lines on the Kicukiro-Nemba road.

"Making children aware of road safety measures will help the new generation make good use of the roads to avoid accidents, mainly when they are going to school,” said the Police publicist.

He added that the children were expected to sensitise the public on proper road usage.

"As we use other measures to discourage wrong acts on the roads, parents will also learn and prevent accidents after learning from children,” he said, adding that all road users are equally responsible for road safety.

"We are indeed happy to have acquired the road safety skills…these will further be transmitted to our colleagues and parents who never got chance to train. It is not until you know the rules of the road that you understand the mistakes you have been making,” said Alex Kanamugire one of the trainees.
