The Rwanda Food and Drug Authority (RFDA) has ordered businesses to stop selling Toblerone chocolate, saying it is associated with quality issues.

Recently, complaints arose on social media regarding the quality of chocolate, a factor that prompted the regulator to investigate the matter.

In a statement released on Saturday, November 19, the regulator said it had "investigated and found that the chocolates did not comply with standards,” especially judging from their hardness and degraded colour.

"All importers of the above-mentioned chocolates, distributors and retailers in possession of the incriminated batches of Toblerone chocolates are requested to remove them from the shelves and stop selling them,” read the statement.

The regulatory authority also called upon all distributors, supermarkets and other retailers in possession of implicated batches of the chocolate to return them where they were bought for proper management.

"All importers of the above mentioned chocolates are requested to receive the returned quantities and report to the FDA the quantities imported, the quantities returned and stock on hand within 15 days,” the statement further read, adding that all the customers that had purchased the implicated batches "are requested to stop their consumption.”

It is understood that the regulator will carry out further investigations on the chocolates to find out the real issues associated with it.
