NGOMA - There has been a significant reduction in maternal mortality rates after Rukumberi Health Centre acquired an ambulance.

The Rukumberi Sector Executive Secretary, Josue Buhinga, said the ambulance which was bought through residents’ contributions, helps expectant mothers to reach health facilities on time.

A total of Rwf7 million was collected from residents for the purpose of  purchasing the vehicle, according to sources.

"We sensitised residents on the importance of having their own ambulance. They bought the vehicle that helps them day and night, to transport the sick. They used to walk hundreds of kilometres while others would even die, before reaching the hospital,” he said. 

Emanuel Munana, 46, a farmer said: "You can imagine the distance from here to Kibungo where a  hospital is located …mothers with complications could die before reaching the hospital. This ambulance came in at the right time and has saved hundreds of lives.”

According to local leaders, Rukumberi is a remote area that is poorly connected by feeder roads, and if it was not for the initiative of the people the area would still be isolated. 

Munana said he was excited that the ambulance picks patients from their homes.

They get you from your door stop and you are taken  to the  hospital…that is great achievement, he said.

"It is incredibly true that people of Rukumberi for the first time are picked from the houses to go for treatment which had never happened before,” he added.
