Louise Mushikiwabo has been re-elected as the Secretary General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).
Mushikiwabo was first elected Secretary General of IOF 2018 and assumed office in January 2019.
The 61-year-old Rwandan diplomat's four-year term was set to expire this year. Mushikiwabo is the fourth and current Secretary General of OIF.
Her re-election took place on Saturday, November 19, during La Francophonie summit in Tunisia, where the Heads of State and Government confirmed that she continues to lead with full consensus.
President Paul Kagame is among the leaders currently in Tunisia.
La Francophonie is an international organization bringing together countries and regions where a significant proportion of the population are French speakers, or where there is a notable affiliation with French culture.
Mushikiwabo has previously served in various portfolios in Rwanda, including, Minister of Information and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Government Spokesperson.
The summit, usually held once every two years, was initially scheduled to be hosted in 2020 but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
It brings together 54 member states, seven associate members, and 27 with observer status from around the world.
The theme of this year’s summit is "Connectivity in diversity – the digital vector of development and solidarity in the French-speaking world.”
