HUYE - District authorities have commended the progress in the construction of classroom blocks to accommodate students under the 9-Year Basic Education programme.

The district vice-Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs, Marie Claire Mukamusonera, made the observation last Friday after a district education meeting.

"In general, we are at a rate of 60 percent completion in all classroom construction work in the district,” she said. "This gives us assurance that by January 2010 all required classrooms will be available for use.”

She however, warned against complacency and called for the involvement of all residents so as to speed up the construction.

Alphonse Mutsindashyaka, the Executive Secretary of Tumba Sector, revealed that the sector embarked on the construction of eight classrooms and 10 washrooms. He said that they will be ready by the end of November.

The executive secretary commended the role of the local residents in the construction of classrooms. He revealed that residents contributed up to 80 percent towards the classroom construction programme.

”Our people collected over Rwf2.5 million and 200 000 bricks for the construction stage, many more provided labour during the construction work,” said Mutsindashyaka.

The district authorities needs 110 classrooms to support the 9- year Basic Education programme which was launched this year.
