RUHANGO - Police in Ruhango District has commended residents for their continued support in curbing crime by reporting cases.

The Ruhango District Police Commander, Supt. Fred Simugaya, said this while addressing residents at the last funeral rites of Nyanza bomb victims, last Saturday.

"The participation of every resident has bore fruits of security and with this collaboration we have been able to bring the criminals to justice and we (police) assure you full security,” Simugaya said.

Five people were on Friday, September 25, killed and over 52 seriously injured after a grenade blast in Karambo market, Kabutare cell, in Mwendo sector.

Two of the injured victims are still hospitalised in Kabgayi and Butare hospital.

Two self confessed suspects, Jean Pierre Habiyambere and Alex Buregeya are currently under police custody.

However, residents and local leaders at the funeral asked that the duo be prosecuted at the scene of crime.

Supt. Simugaya cited the May 14 incident- where residents of Gitisi cell, Bweramana sector; foiled an armed robbery attempt in which two pistols were recovered.

Mayor Celestine Twagirumukiza, also passed condolences to the families of victims and urged residents to be vigilant to avoid insecurity, and similar attacks on innocent residents.

The district also promised continued support to families and victims, who are reportedly recovering.
