KAYONZA- Over Rwf37 million was raised in pledges towards the ongoing classroom construction in Kayonza District.
During a meeting held by district officials, NGOs and religious leaders last week, it was agreed that local NGOs will each contribute Rwf200.000 while churches will contribute Rwf100,000 each.
International NGOs will contribute Rwf300,000 while cooperative societies in the area will also be expected to contribute a specified amount.
Earlier, while addressing the meeting, Mayor Damasce Muhororo appealed to all development partners to contribute generously towards the education cause.
"We have over 74 NGOs and a number of religious institutions in our district. If each NGO and Churches contribute…this will be a big boost to our classroom construction programme,” he said.
Muhororo, noted that if the poor peasants have managed to make their financial contribution, there is no reason why NGOs should fail.
Each individual family in the district has contributed Rwf1,000 towards the construction of the classrooms, according to sources.
The representative of the NGOs agreed to pass on their contribution to the district authorities soon.
During the meeting, it was revealed that the classroom construction has registered remarkable progress, and very soon there will be need for roofing materials in most schools.
‘There is no doubt that the classrooms will be ready by the next academic year’, head teachers added.
