KAYONZA — Over 40 people were arrested in an early morning security check mounted in Kayonza town over the weekend. The joint operation conducted by local leaders and security officials started at 2.00 am and ended at 7.30 am. The community policing committee said the move followed numerous reports of insecurity and violence in the region.

Parading the suspects, the Executive Secretary of Nyagatovu in Mukarange Sector, Bosco Ruhezanihirwa said: "This is the group that smokes marijuana and drinks local gin. They are thus suspected of robbery, fighting at night in bars and involvement in other crimes in Kayonza town and beyond. Surprisingly, some of them do not have any identification cards.”
Most of those arrested who talked to The New Times said they had moved to Kayonza searching for jobs.
Emmanuel Havugimana, 24, who hails from Byumba in the Northern Province said: "I came from Byumba so many years ago and have been working here in Kayoza. I have never thought of owning an ID, since no one asks me for it.”
Claude Havugarurema, 55, from the Western Province, said he also migrated due to economic reasons, and nothing else.
