RWAMAGANA- Varipa Mukeshimana, a shop attendant in Rwamagana narrowly cheated death when a minibus rammed into her shop on the Kigali-Rwamagana highway.

The accident happened last week at about 2 pm.
gripped with fear, the 25-year old girl said she could not explain how she survived death.

"I cannot deceive you by saying that I maneuvered or did anything wise to save my life. It was a narrow escape from death,” she said.

Businesspersons at the scene said the driver whom they claim did not have a license, disappeared immediately from the scene of the accident.

They also complained of other reckless drivers, who they blamed for numerous accidents on the highway.

"Imagine this was just a conductor, but he dared drive on a highway. We have careless and irresponsible drivers in this town. A closer look at our  motorcyclists locally known as Uduhene, reveals that most of them are not licensed,” Michel Gasangwa said.

Traffic officials acknowledge that there are a number of drivers operating without licenses.

"Road accidents have become a matter of grave concern. We are introducing speed governors and other forms of deterrence so that safe driving is ensured. Stricter legal action will be taken against the offenders,” a traffic official who asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the press said.

Meanwhile, it was established that buildings that are located just a few metres from the highway pose danger to tenants. The shop, in which the vehicle rammed, is hardly 5 metres away from the highway.
