The Minister of Education, Dr. Charles Murigande, has revealed that the sector has made tremendous progress despite the many challenges it is still faced with.

He was speaking at the opening of the Annual Joint Review meeting between the Ministry of Education and its development partners.

Murigande said the ministry has registered success in the implementation of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and the Education Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP).

He mentioned the commencing of the 9-Year Basic Education (9YBE) program, distribution of computers, introduction of English language as a medium of instruction and the publishing of the senior three and senior six national examination results online, as some of the milestones in the education sector.

However, the Minister added that despite having achieved a lot this year, the education sector still had a lot of challenges which need to be addressed during this forum.

Among the challenges, the Minister highlighted high dropout rates and the successful implementation of English as a language of instruction.

He also said development partners who do not honour their pledges, were drawing back progress.

The annual meeting aims at reviewing what the education sector has achieved on an annual basis together with its development partners and to forge the way forward.
