The proposed industrial park has received a green light from Rwanda Environment Management Authority [REMA] to host a number of industries that will be relocated from the Gikondo wetland.

The government decided to relocate close to 100 commercial entities located in Gikondo wetland to another industrial park.

A survey conducted on the new park, indicated that all the designs and requirements were compliant with conditions set by REMA.

In an interview with The New Times, Theobals Mashinga the Director of Environmental Awareness and Cleaner said, "We reviewed the RIG assessment for the infrastructures involving the drainage channels, waste management plans and the designs were satisfactory,” 

"What is left is the specific environmental assessment on the products and by-products of the individual industries and their technologies, to find out whether they pose any danger to the environment.”

After being cleared in the first phase of environmental impact assessment, the watchdog is waiting for the second phase of the assessment where individual industries will be assessed before getting the green light to occupy the area.

"We shall have to assess each firm in respect of what they will be producing, the impact of their products on the environment and the measures in place to mitigate these impacts, and that’s when we shall give them the final green light,” Rose Mukankomeje, Director General of REMA said.

The commercial entities include 20 manufacturing industries, 13 automobile workshops, 15 construction companies and several warehouses and workshops.
