KAYONZA – Thirty-Five youths from different sectors of Kayonza district, were yesterday given training in Special Olympics games. 

The three-day work shop was conducted by Rwandan specialists in the Olympic Games. One of the trainers, Sylidio Semanda explained the dynamics involved in the games. 

"It is a program of competitive sports events fashioned after the Olympic Games, and intended for mentally challenged athletes. Special Olympics want everyone to feel special,” he said. 

The trainers say that the mentally handicapped practice all games except those that may endanger them like boxing and javelin. 

Semanda further said that the training, target mostly primary teachers, because they deal with young mentally handicapped children. 

"We are convinced that teachers at this level meet problems of handling the mentally handicapped. The training is thus meant to equip them with skills to handle such special infants,” he added. 

One of the trainees, and the head teacher of Musise primary school in Rukara sector, Celine Nyirahirwe, said the training had equipped them well enough, to deal with mental disabled children.
