THE draws for this year’s Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup have been postponed, Times Sport can reveal.
Initially, the draws had been scheduled for this Sunday in Nairobi but due to unknown reasons, Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye confirmed yesterday that the draws had been postponed.
"We will keep you posted on the new date of the draws,” Musonye said.
Although Musonye refused to disclose the reason behind the delay, sources in Nairobi indicate that it’s linked to Cecafa’s failure to acquire a sponsor for the two-week competition.
All the 11 Cecafa member nations, as well as guest team Zambia, have confirmed participation in the annual regional tournament to be held from November 28 to December 13 in Nairobi and Mumias. Cecafa needs about Rwf376m to host the tournament.
Kenya last hosted the regional showpiece in 1994 that was won by Tanzania, who beat Uganda 4-3 in post-match penalties after the teams had tied 2-2 in regulation time.
Meanwhile, there is a possibility that Supersport could broadcast the matches.
The last two editions were broadcasted by GTV (Gateway Television).
With GTV’s demise also went a lucrative $6 million (Rwf. 3,3b), four-year sponsorship deal it signed with Cecafa in 2007.
