KARONGI – Police in Karongi District have stepped up a campaign to curb various forms of crime, the District Police Commander has said.

Supt. Danny Ndayambaje, said the move is intended to reverse the cases of violent crimes and defilement which stand at 24 and 29 respectively since January.

The police chief blamed defilement on laxity by parents. He however, said crime in the district has significantly reduced over the past years.

"Careless parents who leave their children in the care of housemaids or relatives have contributed to the worrying trend of increases in defilement cases while excessive drinking is attributed to cases of assault within certain sections of this region,” Ndayambaje told The New Times yesterday.

Ndayambaje, called on local leaders to quickly settle minor complaints at local levels for the purposes of easing the delivery of justice.

"Sometimes courts of law fail to dispose of cases on time due to a number of reasons. So there is need to sort out minor cases at the local levels,” he said.
