NYARURGURU - A special English language learning programme locally known as JIJUKA was officially launched last week to benefit residents in the district.
It complements the already existing literacy programme that was being conducted in Kinyarwanda.

Christophe Ntirushwa, the vice mayor in charge of economic affairs said that the programme has been well organised and the curriculum developed.

"Each resident under the programme will be required to learn English. This, we hope will give them basic skills in English language,” said the official.

Fabien Niyitegeka, the Executive Secretary of Rusenge Sector, sounded optimistic about the success of the programme.

"We have received support from primary and secondary school teachers who have promised to teach the language to local residents, this is a big boost for the programme,” he said.

Niyitegeka explained that three English Clubs in three cells within the sector have been started.  "I have so far learnt how to greet people in English, I can also make inquiries in the language,” said Virginia Mukarubega, a member of an English language club in Rusenge Sector.

Frederic Nizeyimana, a primary school teacher who agreed to work as a volunteer says learning English is important especially after the country joined the East African Community.

"The English language will be vital for people who wish to interact with other members of the EAC for business or other reasons. People who already know the language should help others learn,” said the school teacher.
