THE Ministry of Education is set to open two teachers’ training colleges in a bid to increase the number of teachers in the country.

Education minister, Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya said that the two colleges will be located at Rukara and Kavumu in the Southern Province.

"The colleges will award diplomas to secondary school teachers in both science and arts disciplines,” she said recently.

Mujawamariya said that the plan was part of the implementation of the ministry’s ten-year programme to increase the number of teachers both in primary and secondary schools.

Currently, the ratio of a teacher to a child in schools is 1:61, but the number is expected to change to 1:41 in the next ten years, according to the programme.

The minister explained that the two colleges would train O-level teachers who have been lacking in most secondary schools in the country.

Mujawamariya said that only a handful of Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) graduates join teaching profession as many of them opt for other opportunities.
