APR and Military football club have been drawn to play in the national league opener on Wednesday, November 21.
This is the kind of game that the champions would have wished for to start the defence of their title as they chase a record tenth in just 14 seasons. Andy Mfutila’s outfit piped archrivals Rayon Sports to the last year’s league title on goal difference after both sides had finished the season level on 59 points.
In the last games, which were played concurrently to avoid syndicates, APR walloped already relegated Zebra 8-0 in Byumba as Rayon struggled to overcome resilient Police 1-0 at Amahoro.
Military Fc, handled by former Kiyovu and Rayon coach Abu Koroma, is one two newly promoted teams along with Electrogaz.
In the other opening day fixtures, Rayon ‘host’ Electrogaz at Umuganda stadium in Gitarama, Etincelles travel to Huye to take on Mukura, Kibuye hosts AS-Kigali at Gatwaro stadium, Kiyovu take on Marine at Mumena stadium while Atraco and Police battle at Shorongyi grounds.
The fixtures were released yesterday by Ferwafa and afterwards Chief Executive Officer Jules Kalisa confirmed that each of the12 clubs approved them during the federation’s Annual General Assembly that sat on Saturday in Gisenyi.
It would resume on December 29 after the Cecafa tournament and Christmas festivities. Meanwhile, only three teams, Etincelles, APR and Atraco had managed to beat yesterday’s deadline of registering their squads to the national federation.
Unlike in the previous years, the 2007/08 football league would be composed of 12 clubs rather than the usual 14.
Ferwafa have maintained that start of the new season would go ahead as planned with or without sponsors.
And that the league would be put on hold from November 28 to give way to for the national team to start making final preparations for the Cecafa regional tournament due in Tanzania next month.
Ferwafa has been in talks for some time now with some companies including MTN Rwanda and Gateway Television GTV, aimed at finding a prospective sponsor for the 2007/08 national football league but nothing fruitful has been achieved.
