EASTERN PROVINCE

NYAGATARE—In a bid to regain their freedom from Nyagatare district main prison last week Friday night two prisoners lost their lives when they were shot dead by prison guards during their escape.

Sources from Nyagatare prison say prisoners who were suspected to be cattle thugs tried to escape during night hours and were shot by prison guards where they died instantly.

Daniel Mugisha, 25, a notorious cattle thief in Karangazi and Egide Gashaija, 21, had allegedly stolen cattle from retired Rwanda Defence Force Captain Kalisa, from Rwimiyaga sector. The shooting comes after Umutara grazing region livestock farmers are crying foe over the increase in cattle thefts.

Residents in Karangazi describe late Daniel Mugisha, as a notorious cattle crook who had visited prison "a number of times.”

Plans to approach chief inspector of police at Nyagatare were futile as his cell phone was off by press time.
